I had a LONG talk with a friend today.  She shared a lot of personal challenges with me and asked me straight up….

“If I could do any ONE thing to motivate myself towards more healthful change, what would you recommend?”

I said, “Stop telling your body to shut the f%ck up.”

“Whaaaattttt…?” she asked.

I laughed out loud.  Ask me a question and I’ll give you an answer.  Yes, indeed.

“Seriously!  All those pain relievers, ibuprofen, aspirin, anti-histamines, NSAIDs — all those over-the-counter pain meds you’re popping — stop them — just stop. They aren’t fixing anything.  They are only dulling your pain and exacerbating your issues. If you start feeling shitty enough, maybe you’ll do something about your discomfort.  Right now, every time your body cries for help you tell it to STFU and stuff a pill in your mouth. It’s not fixing anything. You asked me what you could do to motivate yourself, right? Use your pain as leverage for change.”

The body was designed with what I call  the “hot stove” theory built in.  If you touch a hot stove and burn yourself, you work extra hard not to make that mistake again, right?

Your body uses a similar mechanism to draw your attention to things you should no longer be doing.  It’s called pain.  Pain has a root cause.  Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to find the root cause of the pain and stop it at the source.  That means physical as well as emotional pain.

  • When you wake up with your fingers looking like little swollen sausages, you have inflammation.
  • When you have joint pain that won’t quit, you have inflammation.
  • When you have brain fog so bad you can’t remember your co-workers names — inflammation.
  • When you are sorry ass tired every freaking day…fatigued beyond measure – inflammation.

These symptoms and many more are routed in inflammation. I can guarantee you that a large majority of that pain is coming from your diet.

We’ve been conditioned since birth to pop pills.  It’s time to stop.  90% of them are doing more harm than good. 

Your body is an amazing machine.  If you give it the proper tools to function (nutrients) it will work FOR you not against you.  Please, stop telling it to STFU and give it the tools it needs to renew and repair itself.
